Have you caught yourself daydreaming of a fairytale-like destination that captures the essence of European charm (but without many of the crowds that you see in larger European cities)?....

Look no further than Bruges, Belgium.

This medieval city, often referred to as the "Venice of the North," is a timeless masterpiece that will leave you spellbound - it certainly did for us.

Thomas and I absolutely adored this charming town, and personally, I think Bruges should be added to your European travel bucket list if it isn't already.

A Step Back in Time: The Old World Charm

ree

As soon as you set foot in Bruges, you'll feel like you've stepped into the pages of a storybook. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed city boasts well-preserved medieval architecture, winding cobblestone streets, and picturesque canals that give it a magical allure.

If you are a fan of smaller European towns, then Bruges' historic center will be right up your alley, with its towering bell towers and medieval churches. What makes it very unique (and one of my favorite parts) is its canals that bend and weave throughout the town.

Some "must dos":

  • Take a stroll through the Markt, the heart of Bruges, where the iconic Belfry stands tall (if you have watched En Bruges, then this is the famous tower in the movie). Climb its 350+ steps for a panoramic view of the city.

  • Walk along the canals, and you'll be greeted by the sight of quaint bridges and elegant swans gracefully gliding on the water (seriously, like a fairytale), adding to the city's enchanting ambiance. The swans were my favorite!

  • Discover Bruges by boat - more on that below.

  • Enjoy the Belgian beer and food scene! I have listed my favorites later in this post.

Cultural and Artistic Treasures

Bruges is not just a pretty face; it's also a cultural haven for art enthusiasts and history buffs. The Groeningemuseum houses an impressive collection of Flemish and Belgian art, including works by Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling.

We lucked out, and when we visited Bruges, there was a Salvador Dali pop-up exhibit (Salvador Dali is my favorite artist!). Art aside, the city's unique museums like the Choco-Story and the Frietmuseum (yes, a museum dedicated to fries!) offer delightful insights into Belgium's delectable culinary delights.

Cruise the Canals: Discovering Bruges by Boat

Bruges' network of canals is not just for show; it's a key element of the city's charm.

We enjoyed our boat tour to explore Bruges from a different perspective. As we glided along the waters, my favorite part was taking in the city's architecture, hidden gardens, and charming bridges.

If you are lucky you will see Bruges' most loved dog, Fidèle, in the window.

The boat tour is especially romantic during the evening when the city lights cast a magical glow upon the water.

Chocolate & Beer

Belgium is renowned for its culinary offerings, and Bruges is no exception. Think: Belgian chocolates, waffles, frites and beer.

On this trip I realized what my favorite beer is (and still is!), which is Tripel Karmeliet. I still order it to have it imported when I cannot find it in the store.

Here were our favorite places to eat and drink in Bruges:

  • Dinner & Jazz: T’ZWart Huis Jazz and Blues Restaurant

  • Underground Belgian beer hall: T ‘Poatersgat

  • Tucked away, cozy Belgian pub: Cafe Rose Red

  • Bruges' famous, family-run brewery: Huisbrouwerij De Halve Maan

  • Beer bar located in an 800-year-old medieval cellar (amazing!): Le Trappiste

  • Oldest continuously running café in Bruges: Cafe Vlissinghe

  • The Belgian Pigeon House

Escape to Breathtaking Surroundings...and Stay in Castle

Beyond the city, Bruges offers opportunities to explore the serene Belgian countryside. We rode bikes through the town, and you can definitely take them out through the countryside. We felt like we were walking through a postcard when we started seeing landscapes dotted with windmills and grazing cattle.

Drumroll please...the most unique place I have ever stayed in was in Bruges when we were able to stay on the Castle Ten Berge family estate. The family was extremely welcoming, and it was amazing to be on of their first guests to stay in their renovated family castle. Every morning they made us a homemade, Belgian breakfast, and we access to much of the grounds and pond around the castle. The interior of the castle was STUNNING with ornate architecture and details in all the rooms, including a private chapel. Hands down, this was the most unique lodging experience I have had in Europe.

A Fairytale Worth Experiencing

Bruges is a destination that captures the hearts of all who visit. Its timeless beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality make it an unforgettable European vacation spot. Whether you're strolling along the canals, indulging in decadent chocolates, or marveling at historic masterpieces, Bruges promises an experience straight out of a storybook.
